S.S. Stewart 20th Century 5-string open-back banjo

Price: $900.00 USD

Circa 1899 S.S. Stewart “20th Century” 5-String Banjo #53483
Description:
Offered for sale is an antique S.S. Stewart “20th Century” 5-string open-back banjo, serial number 53483, made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and dating approximately to 1899.
This is a particularly attractive Stewart with extensive mother-of-pearl and decorative wire inlay on the peghead, pearl fingerboard markers, a beautifully carved heel, period-style friction tuners, and traditional dowel-stick construction. The back of the peghead is stamped “S.S. Stewart Phila. U.S.A.”, and the dowel stick carries the “20th Century” model identification.
The banjo presents very well for an instrument approximately 125 years old. The neck, heel and peghead appear structurally sound, and I do not see evidence of a major repaired break. There is normal finish wear, oxidation and age-related patina throughout. The tuning pegs appear period appropriate, although I cannot guarantee that every component is original to the instrument. The banjo head appears to be a later replacement.
The decorative pearl and wire work is one of the highlights of this example and appears substantially intact. The carved heel is also especially attractive.
This banjo has not been professionally restored or recently set up, so a buyer should expect that normal adjustment or servicing may be appropriate before regular playing. Because of its age, I would recommend having it evaluated before installing modern high-tension steel strings.
Asking $950 OBO.
Sold as a vintage/antique instrument in its present condition. I am happy to provide additional detailed photographs to a serious buyer.
