Roger Young Whyte Ladie openback

Price: $1,050.00 USD

This a banjo made by Roger Young, brother of Lynn Young who lives in Buffalo and is the spark plug for the music scene in this area. I bought this banjo after hearing a couple of Roger's banjos being played by a few great old time players in the area that I get to play with at our local old time jam. I think there are around 8-9 of Roger's banjos in our area. I really liked the sound of the "Whyte Ladie" (Electric) tone ringed banjos that they played so bought one.

Lynn was my instructor when I started with the banjo 8 years ago and I was eventually invited to play with his local group. Lynn is well known among old time musicians and plays guitar, banjo and fiddle. He was featured (along with a young Roger in a brief appearance) in the "Dance All Night, The Highwoods Stringband Story":

This banjo is based on a "StewMac" pot with a W.L tone ring and a custom neck made by Roger out of well cured maple. It has a 25 7/8" scale, a Fyberskyn head, Kershner tailpiece and 5 Star tuning pegs. It has a spike at the 7th fret. It will ship in a "Musician's Friend" case (designed for a resonator banjo but will be well padded for shipping). It has GHS PF 150 strings on it.

I tried Renaissance and a goat skin heads on this banjo and found the "Fyberskyn" to have the best sound for me.

Reason for selling? I got hooked on the fiddle and have been playing the fiddle since I bought my first one in August of 2019. I've sold my Prust and Noah Cline fretless banjos and will keep my Reiter A flat and Sagmoen short scale, Nygut strung banjos for playing with my old time group (and to pass on to my two grandsons) but my main interest is now fiddle playing.

There are more pictures of the Young banjo on my media page and I can "Skype" with anyone interested in this banjo.

(The music file below was recorded in Sept. 2017, I hope I've improved a little bit. It's been awhile since I've played a steel strung banjo so, if I Skype, playing this banjo, it probably won't be the best.)
