SOLD 1925 Gibson TB-3 #8090-28

Price: $1,000.00 USD

This 1925 ball-bearing Mastertone was rescued from a dump in Stockholm, Sweden. It came to me in pieces, but fortunately almost everything was there. All pieces of the ball-bearing tone-ring assembly were present except for one washer and three ball-bearings; I was able to find correct-size ball-bearings but the banjo is still short one washer. One coordinator-rod nut is a replacement from the hardware store and the tailpiece mounting bracket, although prewar, is for the larger-diameter coordinator rods used on later Mastertones. . . it's not optimal but will work for now. As you can see from the photos, there is some minor delamination of the rim and one splintered place on top of the rim. There is also an area of separation of the outer veneer on the rim and a few splits in the inner rim veneer. There is one area of cracking and splintering on the upper edge of the resonator. The resonator finish is in rough condition with a good deal of lacquer flaking. There are two missing sections of fingerboard binding on the treble side. Due to the crown height of the head currently on the banjo, the strings don't clear the tension hoop. One tuner bushing is missing. The two-piece armrest has an old repair using a brass pin. There's heavy fret wear. Please visit the "more info" link for complete photos. This banjo will be shipped in a newer hard shell case.
