17-Fret Short Scale Clifford Essex Paragon Tenor Banjo - Reproduction Neck and Resonator - UK
Price: £2,450.00 GBP ($3,056.30 USD)
A few years ago, I came across an orphaned 5-string Clifford Essex Paragon body whose neck had been bought (strangely enough) by someone who wanted to convert a tenor Paragon banjo into a 5-string.
As I've always fancied a 17-fret short-scale Paragon I had a turned reproduction resonator made by UK luthier Alan Arnold and a 17-fret neck made by Dave Stacey, who is probably the UK's premier maker of reproduction necks.
I asked Dave to make an exact reproduction neck that featured Clifford Essex-type inlays, but that could never be sold as an actual Paragon as I don't like the idea of repros being passed off to unwary buyers as the real thing at some point down the line.
What I ended up with was a superb-sounding, 17-fret, short scale, Clifford Essex Paragon tenor banjo that I had intended to keep forever... however.....
Another of my dream tenor banjos was one that I saw in Edinburgh when I was much younger and which had, allegedly, come from Barney McKenna of Dubliners fame. This one was a Clifford Essex Paragon that had been fitted with a Gibson Mastertone tenor banjo neck. Last year I managed to get my hands on very early 18-fret Mastertone tenor neck (which I had intended to use to replace the 17-fret repro neck), followed very closely by a bargain-priced rosewood Paragon 5-string .... but, since the Mastertone neck matches the rosewood body perfectly, I now have another Paragon tenor banjo ... and I don't need two....
Pricewise, this 17-fret short scale Paragon tenor banjo cost me approximately £2,750 to put together and I'd like to recover as close to that amount as I can possibly get.
