Up for sale is a C.Baron Gourd Banjo. This is stringed instrument build #104 (excluding my solid body electric guitars, which are numbered on a separate system). The body is made from a hard-shelled gourd, which features a fiber glassed interior for strength. The head is tacked and glued calfskin. The neck is made from cherry, as is the tailpiece and the bridge. The neck is approximately 1" thick, with a 1-1/2" width before the 5th string, and a 1-7/8" width after the 5th string. The neck, tailpiece, and gourd are finished with tung oil.
The nut is made from ebony, and the string tree is made from richlite. The bridge features 5 holes to reduce the mass. The action is currently .014" at the nut, and 3/16" at the 12th fret (while it is high, it is not a problem due to the low tension nylguts, and it also allows for the head sag in humid conditions. A lower bridge can also be made upon request, however I find that the low-tuned nylgut strings play a bit cleaner with a higher action). It is currently strung with Aquila Nylgut Minstrels. There is a frailing and thumb scoop for comfort when playing clawhammer. The neck also features side fret position markers on a 25-1/2" scale. The strap buttons are located for better balance when playing with a strap.
Please note that there was a repair on the gourd, but the repair is stable (seen the last photo).
