Bloodwood & Ash Gourd Banjo

Price: $150.00 USD

This gourd started life on a farm in Roopville, GA. I mated the hard ash neck with a 1/8" bloodwood fingerboard and peghead overlay that really pops. The 25" scale neck is treated with seven coats of boiled linseed oil, topped off with wax until silky smooth. The finish comes out to satin, which blends nicely with the natural tones of the colors present. The geared tuners function smoothly on the slotted peghead with Aquila Nylgut reds on a bone nut.

The gourd features an oval shape which gives it great character. It also sports a 12" length, which gives it great volume. After cleaning the inside fully, the gourd interior was sanded and polished with wax for resonance. The sound holes are asymmetrical circular patterns near the neck. The goat skin tone blends nicely with the gourd color and is held in place by detailed upholstery tacks.

The action is easily playable for clawhammer (with scoop) or three-finger on a bridge handmade from grenadillo topped with ebony. The tailpiece is mahogany. The neck is secured tightly with well-fitting bloodwood shims.

While this is my second gourd banjo so it's far from perfect, there are two minor imperfections - one tuner hole was finished slightly canted compared to the others and there is about 3/8" section of the peghead overlay where the glue didn't contact. Otherwise, this banjo is freshly strung and polished.
