For sale is one of my personal banjos, built for me in collaboration with Huber Banjos.
The project started with an original Gibson fiddle-shaped tenor neck that Steve Huber had in his collection. Its unique blend of peghead patterns inspired the design for this instrument. After finding the perfect mahogany neck blank, we set out to create a five-string version that captured the spirit of the original while becoming something entirely its own.
The banjo features an older Huber no-hole tone ring, one of Steve's engineered rims, an exceptionally clean early-1950s Gibson bowtie resonator, top-tension hardware with a solid brass flange, and a set of vintage Barnes buttons. I personally weathered and antiqued all of the metalwork & the woodwork to give it the appearance of a well-loved vintage instrument. It has a distinctive look that always starts conversations at festivals and jam sessions.
This banjo has seen plenty of stage time. I've played it with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, at the Grand Ole Opry & most recently it was featured on the latest season of The Dailey & Vincent Show when Vince Gill invited me to play banjo with him. I've included photos from that television taping.
Beyond its appearance, this banjo is an exceptional player. It has a powerful, responsive tone, records beautifully, and is equally at home on stage or in the studio.
