SOLD SOLD - Gibson 1924 RB-jr., original 5 string banjo
Price: $1,650.00 USD
This banjo is from the very first batch of Gibson 5-string banjos made ! While Gibson made tenor banjos beginning in 1918, they did not market a 5-string until 1924. This one bears the FON 11051A-15 stamped inside the rim, only 4 others from that batch are known. It also has a Gibson script sticker. It is an open back with a laminated 10 ½ in. dia. rim (2 ½ in. deep) with all of its original hardware. It does not have a tone ring of any kind, has dual metal coordinator rods, the original cloud tailpiece, and a skin head. The one-piece neck is maple, stained black without any peghead lamination or inlays. The ebony fretboard is extended over the rim, 26 ¾ in. scale with 24 virtually perfect frets. The neck is perfectly straight with MOP dot inlays and ebony nut. The tuners are the original simple friction tuners. It plays very well both clawhammer or 3-finger style. It’s amazing that Gibson chose to market such a plain and simple style as their first 5-string offering! There are only 15 RB-jr’s known, from 4 lots in 1924; an estimated 119 were ever made. This banjo is in excellent original condition and would be a wonderful and affordable addition to any Gibson collection. It comes with its original bump case that is in good to fair condition. $1,650. Includes shipping and insurance in the USA.
