Weymann Short Neck, A-Scale Open Back
Price: $1,600.00 USD
For sale is this rare Weymann short-necked banjo with an 11” pot. It’s it beautiful both to look at and to hear/play.
Made in the early 1900s. The scale is 22” from the nut to the bridge, the length of the finger board is 16” from the nut to the end. It has 22 frets.
Very ornate woodworking inside the pot and with a carved heel. The wooden stress bar inside the pot is inlaid and has the number “4374” stamped into the wood. Tone ring appears to be simply rolled metal, silver in color so probably not brass but I’m not sure.
The tuners in the peg head are friction tuners and appear to be inlaid ivory. The fifth string peg is also friction but is made of what looks like polished wood. Definitely playable and has a nice tone. The headstock veneer is showing its age with some cracks and 2 small areas of missing veneer (see photos).
It has a skin head. gDGBD tuning is a bit loose but will work. A tuning is better. It is strung with red nylon strings. The tone is warm and it has a nice cluck. Very playable and once I played it a bit the tuners began to grab and held well, staying in tune (as much as any banjo) even after sitting a couple of days. Someone suggested I get some peg dope to help the tuners hold but I haven’t needed to.
Also known as a banjeaurine if you look it up online.
If you want to hear it send a message and I’ll record a short video.
