1903 Fairbanks Whyte Laydie 7 - Consalvi Engraved - 10 3/4
Price: $7,300.00 USD
By some standards the most desirable open back banjo ever produced...a 1903 10 3/4" head, 26" scale Fairbanks Whyte Laydie #7 with original double bump case. All original parts including original wide cobra hooks (the 4 hooks to the right of the tailpiece are original Fairbanks cobras but have different thread) a very old (if not original) Soo Brand by Rogers skin head. The Consalvi inlays are bright and bold and everything you would want in a banjo of this caliber. Original gold patent tuning pegs with the original sharply cut (not fatter) MOP buttons - the nicest set of either I've ever seen. Original nut/pip and clipped no-knot tailpiece.
Sounds and plays as fantastic as it is to look at.
Condition: This banjo did have some restoration work done to the crumbling peghead and backstrap. The work is very good but not the finest caliber. There is a small portion of pearl missing from one of the smaller righthand fronds in the peghead inlay. The original frets are in good shape - some wear is evident but nothing pressing. There is a bit of wear (looks like belt buckle to me) to one inch long spot of marquetry and binding on the pot (see pictures) and some discoloration there. The original double bump case has wear on the back bottom and some black tape holding the case handle.
